London-based Insight Investment has appointed Shankar Athreya as head of farmland investments, the company has announced.
Based in London, he will report to head of agriculture Reza Vishkai and will work alongside David Beca, head of farmland management.
Commenting on the appointment, Vishkai said: ‘Shankar’s strategic expertise in agribusiness and proven track record across a wide array of transactions will play a pivotal role in developing our presence as a manager of choice in this sector.’
‘Sophisticated investors are increasingly recognising the strong secular forces supporting the development of the farming sector as an asset class. They should adopt an active approach towards the origination, acquisition and management of these assets,’ he added.
Athreya had been global head of strategy and business development at the Singapore-based agricultural business Olam International since 2005.
In this role, he led mergers, acquisitions, investments, joint ventures and disposals in Africa, the Americas, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. Before this, Athreya spent more than a decade in the advisory and investment banking business.
Currently, Insight advises on investments in livestock, dairy and arable farmland in Australia, Chile, New Zealand, Poland and Romania.
The company, which is owned by BNY Mellon, now has $565 billion in assets under management across fixed income, liability-driven investment, absolute return, cash management, multi-asset, specialist equity and currency strategies.
